In the last couple of weeks i’ve started rewriting the second draft of a feature length screen play I wrote in NY when I was studying at film school there over the summer. Needs a hellova lot of research this time ‘round because I made most of my facts up then to meet deadlines and I need to get it right.
This hunt led me to the work of Edward Sheriff Curtis. He was paid to document as much American Indian traditional life as possible before that way of life disappeared. He took over 40,000 photographic images, 10,000 wax cylinder audio recordings of language/music, and written descriptions of culture from over 80 tribes. His material (he lived from 1868-1952) is, in most cases, the only recorded history for most of these tribes.
